K-Country Alberta Rocks

With the flooding in the Calgary area I decided to stay away from the Bow on my first Alberta fishing adventure. Not about to let that get in the way I headed out a few hours from Calgary in hunt for some rainbows. I had heard of some stocked lakes - figured it should be nice to get out and explore a bit…

As with many of my reports I spend more time getting the photos ready and not enough time writing the story. So again, this one will have a bunch of photos and only a few words ;) I think in this case it would just take too long to explain in words how amazing today was…

So the exploring was almost better than the fishing… almost. It confirmed that I had made the right decision in moving out here. I mean Blue Mountain is nice and all but why is it called a mountain? I spent a few extra hours on my way out hiking and exploring the area as I drove in to the Kananaskis Country. The Canadian Rockies are simply amazing; so beautiful!!!

Aside from the mountains the area holds a large variety of wildlife:

I guess to make a long story short - I went fishing for rainbows and ended up catching Bull trout. I managed one rainbow at the beginning of the day and then went on a dry spell for a while - easy to handle when the lake you’re fishing looks like this:

I tried to cover as much water as possible. Later on in the afternoon I started talking to one of the guys who I’d seen a couple times through the morning. He basically made my day by turning over a spot he’d been fishing and giving me the how-to for presenting to some cruising bulls. After a frustrating period of finding the right fly I went back to a standard zonker More Info On Zonker. I had been fishing the streamers More Info On Streamers rather aggressively before but apparently a nice slow retrieve is most effective in that area… My first bull was a healthy fish and one I will not forget any time soon. Those things are so powerful. I’ve read in magazines that they don’t fight very much - but my drag has never gotten such a workout before! They are powerful fish…

I went on to catch a few more bulls in the same size range. This was the largest Bull I caught that evening. It was a long battle and I was nervous after the failed attempts of earlier battles. The bull trout shake their head and twist a lot and seem to have a good nack at breaking off. Thankfully I was able to bring this guy in… I should also mention that not only did the guy I mentioned earlier give me the pointers - he also helped me land and photograph the fish! So very appreciated; definitely great memories…

On the way back to Calgary I saw a neat show of the clouds and sun as a thunderstorm rolled in - pretty finish to an awesome day!

Once again, sorry for being brief - hopefully the photos at least do some justice for my experience… There will hopefully be many more to follow this summer!

Peace,
