Fish Still Bite When The Weather Is Not So Grand
I made it out to the Grand River for my second time this season. Today I met up with Coldreive and Comparadun for some Brown action…
We started out on the water close to noon since it was quite cold earlier in the morning. Upon arriving riverside we saw a multitude of sparrows hunting the midges flying around - and there were a lot of midges! Within moments of showing up we had tiny flies crawling around on our clothes. I got a couple shots off of Cold’s shirt:

We covered a fair amount of water in search of some active fish. I was tossing some streamers
around to no avail. The water was very low and clear where we were so we tried to find some of the deeper runs to fish. Around one or so some BWO
’s started emerging.

The occasional tyke would come up for a dry but nothing too consistent. The day was moving pretty slow until Cold’ came down and showed us how to do it by hooking up with a gorgeous brown. Measured out at just over 19" - Good catch!

One fish could have been a fluke - but Cold’ kept hooking up. He showed us the isopod pattern he was using and shared his stash. After tying on a tan #18 isopod I managed to hook up with an acrobatic brown coming in around 14" or so…
We moved to a couple other locations looking for some more action throughout the afternoon. Brian from Troutfitters joined up with us for a while. I got to watch him pull out brown after brown as he experimented with different patterns
. Most BWO style nymphs
would do the trick in the afternoon. I had some luck with a #18 gold beadhead Hares Ear…
Did I mention that it was very cold and very wet? Well it was. But the fish were still there
Here’s a male from the evening that I found on the way out…

Hopefully the weather behaves the rest of the weekend!
