Damon Pro-Staff Fly Rod Review

After trying, without success, to pry O’Reilly’s test Damon Raquette from his hand, I am sure I hear Mr. O mutter "from my cold dead hands!" As I stood in the background jumping up and down screaming "my turn my turn!!"

It was my turn to check out a Damon fly rod. Not only was it a Damon, they were kind enough to send me their top of the line 9′ 4pc. 8wt. Pro-Staff to test out.
First off, it’s a beautiful rod to look at and beautifully appointed too. The matte dark gray blank is fitted with the highest quality titanium carbide snake and stripping guides. All seven through 13 weight models feature titanium anodized, machined aluminum reel seats with fixed fighting butts.
I have been referring to it kindly as the "Terminator", for its steely good looks.

This is a light, fast action rod that I have had the pleasure of using for the past two seasons. Last spring for steelhead and this fall for salmon.
I have had it out on numerous occasions, even messed around with it on pike and bass. It shoots line like crazy even with large weighted flies. It’s a delight to fish with.

I did get into a few good sized salmon with this rod too, but none cooperated for the photos.

The rod is fast, but not stick like and has a ton of backbone and flex even when turning over short lengths of line.

I give this rod a 10+. For me the action is perfect.

I spoke with Tim Damon and he updated me on a few goings on at Damon. He mentioned that the Pro-Staff series has been redesigned.
The current Pro Staff series will be discontinued in January and will be replaced with the new Pro Staff + series. The new Pro Staff + will be lighter and faster than the high end and high priced rods we are used to seeing in our local shops. Proprietary carbon scrim process and binding matrix, proprietary multi-modulus blank construction in 4 and 5 piece versions.

All of the Damon rods are made on site and thoroughly tested. Not only do they have a great product, but they are great people to deal with. At Damon you get to actually talk with the people who make the rods.
Every new Damon fly rod is covered by Damon’s Lifetime Warranty and comes complete with rod bag and aluminum rod tube.
Before blowing the bank roll on your next fly rod, I would seriously suggest giving Damon Rods a call, you won’t be disappointed. I am truly a hooked on Damon’s rod building know-how and quality assurance. Great bunch of people with a great product.
