W.W. Grigg Fly Rod Review
W.W. Grigg 4/5 wt. 4 pc. Rod Review
When Rob asked me to try out a 4 piece 5/6 weight W.W. Grigg I was pumped. The rod was tested out Alberta style and it did not disappoint. The 9′ IM 6 graphite Grigg is advertised as a 5/6 weight but it fishes more like a 5. It comes in a 31" crush proof tube which is perfect for travelling and for the backcountry fisherman. To put this rod through it’s paces I wanted to try a variety of fly fishing. First stop was the Elk Creek pond. This is a high country spring fed pond that it stocked with football like Rainbows that grow swiftly on a diet of fresh water shrimp and insects. The rainbows cruise these Emerald clear waters picking off the shrimp and various insect hatches. You need to be able to put out a decent cast and at times change directions of your cast as the pods move around the pond. I found the Grigg easy to cast and I could pull a fly out of the water easily and get it to another part of the pond. The rod handled the fiesty football like rainbows with ease.

Challenge #2 was a favorite meadow section of Elk Creek. |

This nice Rocky Moutain whitefish nailed a BH nymph in a nice corner pool. |

Further upstream a chunky Brown was coaxed from it’s under water hide out and the rod handled the on sueing battle with ease. Further up the road The 9′ rod made it easy to dabble nymphs into the small coner pools of Lynx Creek for tiny Cutts. The last test for the Grigg was the world class North Ram river. The rod cast easily to the shore line banks and logjams in this freestone mountain stream. Unfortantley a nasty lightning/hail storm cut this river expedition short. Over all the Grigg handled all types of situations and performed with great success. If your looking for versatility look for a Grigg. I rate it 5 out of 5! |
