William Joseph Emerger Pack Review

Around US$98

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to fish with a better alternative to the heavily loaded down vest, then WJ has the answer in it’s Emerger “bum pack”. This is a pretty unique piece of gear, and it lives up to all the good things that WJ claims for it.
I know that I’ve always tried to alleviate the strain on my neck and back by using a cheap bum pack to carry extra stuff like drink bottle, camera, etc. With the Emerger, I could do away with the vest altogether and get everything comfortably in with room to spare. On hot, muggy days that’s a bonus.

Here are some of its features:

· Dual water bottle holders. I personally only carry one bottle, but the other pocket serves real well to carry a camera, a sandwich, etc.
· Waterproof zippered pouch. I use it for my camera, but it would be good for a wallet, keys, etc.
· Moulded foam suspension belt and pad that fits against your back. Belt is easily adjustable when you need to swing the pack around for access.
· Large carrying handle. Very handy.
· Tippet control system, which allows you to thread up to 5 different sizes out for easy access.
· Multiple pockets with divided pouches, for carrying everything you ever needed to carry.
· Numerous places to hang stuff, like forceps and sharpener.
· Two retractable coiled zingers with superb attachment clips.
· An elastic strap for holding a floatant bottle. Superb idea, you’ll never drop/loose another bottle. (I’d like to see one more for my dessicant bottle.)
· Fold-down pocket front that can be used as a ‘table’. (I did not find this feature to be of much use.)
· Very big, easy to grip zippers.
· All-round solid quality in a pack that can take any use and abuse you would likely toss at it.

The pic shows the pile of stuff I’ve been able to easily fit in, with room to spare for a sandwich, more fly boxes, whatever.
Pretty neat!
