Grand River Fly Fishing Ontario

Today was a great day to be out on the Grand river - everything was provided: sun, bugs, big fish!,

I’m completely exhausted after today. I made it out to the river at an upper section by just after 6. My plan was simple - start out fly fishing streamers, then as soon as there was some surface activity switch to dries if possible ;) I was rewarded pretty quickly with a nice 15"er:

If I had hooked up on a few more of the browns that tried to smash the streamer I’d probably have just gone home early a happy man… but they kept revealing themself without actually hooking up. I tend to fish a pattern through till I don’t get a reaction, then switch to another streamer - often that’s enough to get a strike.

I rounded up a few great fish this way within the first couple hours on the water:

The above fish combined with the following were amazing fish. This one here was bang on 20". Pretty cool :0

The surface action had really started to pick up by the time I released that fish. Early on in the morning it was small (#16) caddis action. A fly that sat low in the surface did the job.

As I moved down the river I noticed that some of the fish were starting to feed off the midges also. I got into a big run of fish feeding on midges. It took a few tries but eventually I found the fly to get the fish. These are the midges they were feeding on:

Here’s a nice little brown I nailed on the midge - the inset in the photo shows the pattern a bit. Basically its a light green body with white CDC wings.

By early afternoon things slowed down a bit. Soon the small craneflies started flying around and the browns took notice. I don’t have a great crane pattern yet apparently as it was challenging to get many hits on my offerings. I picked up a couple little guys along with one fish on a San Juan worm… I took off a little early from the river. All in all a very nice day!

I was so pre-occupied with the risers that I didn’t take a moment to photograph a little crane - will do next week though.

Have a good one!
