Nice Day On The Grand River - Canada

The weather was great today so I decided to go out to the Grand River for the afternoon/evening at the last minute…

After about 30 minutes out on the water I noticed Rob O’Reilly out of the blue. We were fishing an upper section of the river and seemed to have it -almost- all to ourselves; a nice change from the past few weekends… I think the wind or the opening bass season encouraged people to be elsewhere :)
I’m not going to put too much detail into this report cuz its late and I’m tired - but I thought I’d supply some new pics from the day.
In the air for the afternoon were some bwo’s, cranes, midges, and the staple caddis. A lot of micro caddis actually.
Here’s a pair of midges who seem to be getting along - there were so many of these as the evening progressed:

While we worked our way upriver I tried a variety of patterns. At one point I gave up on the nymphs and tried a streamer. Got this guy on the first cast

That was the only taker I got on a streamer. Rob had some nice success with a streamer later on in the evening though…
I took a few minutes to rummage around some stones and see what was moving around. Here is some of what I found:
This is a nice little caddis specimen - I pulled him out of his case a bit for a better look

There were tonnes(!) of isopods:

I also noticed a lot of small larva - I think from midges but could be mistaken:

On the way back downriver I noticed a collection of crayfish shells - probably the hot place in town for seagulls to eat… Anyway - these things were huge! Here’s a couple sets of claws - they were simply massive.

Here is a shot of a black caddis - I’ll try getting some closer shots next time I’m out

Rob and I noticed these nets created in shallow areas of the river. Obviously something creates these to filter food out of the water. The question is what makes them? Any ideas?

There was some slow surface action in the evening. I managed to sting 4 fish in sequence. I was using a small #18 caddis emerger (dark). I took that as my lesson and decided to call it a night.
Take care everyone,
DanJ
