Thompson Whip Finisher

A great tool for tying a whip knot when you are using a hackle guard and great for getting under the hackle on small dry flies.
More difficult to use than the Matarelli style whip finisher, the Thompson will take a few days (or weeks) to get the hang of.

Hook the thread between the fly and the bobbin with the hook arm.
Hook the thread with the s shaped end of the whip finisher (close to the hook eye). Then bring the thread from your bobbin and run it across the inner s-shape nearest the arm of the whip finisher.

Rotate the whip finisher clockwise just behind the eye of the hook keeping the thread under tension. Make six to ten turns. Keep the whip finisher tool in line with the hook.
The arm will start to flex toward the hook eye with each wrap.

After the six or so turns, gently back the bend of the whip finisher out of the whip knot. Keeping pressure on the thread with the spring arm of the whip finisher.
Pull the slack out of the whip knot from the bobbin. When the spring arm reaches the knot , pull it out and cinch the knot.
