Sage TCR Fly Rod Review
Sage TCR Review (Technical Casting Rod) 4 pc 5wt
It took me a few days to get used to it, ok, maybe a week.
Sage TCR FLy Rod
I did let several others try a few swings and everyone who tested it said the same thing, "Wow! I have never felt anything like this before."
If you are not a fan of fast action rods, this is definitely not for you. Sage XP owners might like it, but this is nothing like an XP, the Sage TCR is crazy fast!
My first thought, at least before hooking a fish, is that something this stiff can’t be sensitive, can it? (starting to sound like a xxx movie here, bear with me) The answer is Yes, it has a ton of tip action, even on small brookies the Sage TCR’s tip bends, flexes, how did they do that?
I like tossing large lead laden nymphs
around. Even on small streams a size 8+ heavyweight will come out of my fly box sooner or later. I can shoot these nasties around with my 3wt just fine on small Credit type streams, if I have to, but sometimes I plan on only tying these things on (and I do mean things) and for me, nothing can compare to the action on the Sage TCR.
Casting straight up stream, with an anchor tied on my tippet, hooked this nice Credit brown.

When you have a rod this fast, you can pick line up off the water at amazing distances, and I do mean amazing. False casting, not necessary.
The upper reach of the Grand river is really where I found the TCR to be a huge asset. I fished it a dozen or so times with the TCR. One of those days the wind was howling. So windy that I would have normally packed it in hours earlier, but the TCR kept me on the water. Partly because I watched another fisher trying his best to get a 20 foot cast out (without wrapping the line around his neck). Not knowing what he was using, line wt. etc. I did notice my casts could get the fly out there.
On regular days (non-hurricane) my casting distance was noticeably pumped up a notch. But what impressed me the most was the lack of false casting. A few pulls on the line, pick up and shoot. Hmmm……..I like this! actually, I think I love this!
Of course the Sage TCR’s fittings are all top notch, as it should be at $700 US. This is huge dollars in my books, and probably for the majority of fishers. Do you really need a Porsche to get into work when your old sedan still makes the trip? Hell, no! Do you want one anyway? Hell, yes!
Well……If you love fast action rods, want something truly unique in every way, have money stuffed under your bed, then this is the rod for you. As soon as you pick it up you will know you are using a Sage TCR.
Do I like this rod? No, I love this rod.
