Dragging A Dry Fly

Fished a UC trib today fish, were playful some fish rising. Headed over to the rail run where there were many insects in the air some 16-20 Mayflies in a brownish colour, some small stuff 22 and less amongst others. No fish to be seen at the rail run “which way did they go?” Headed back over to the trib. Here is a technique I used today, those new to the sport may find it useful.

So you are at your fishing hole, and there is no rising fish. What to do? Well, lets head upstream and cast down to the fish.
Position yourself far enough up stream as to not spook the fish. I like to go directly upstream from the fish. Now how to get you your fly a little past the fish.
1. Make a cast a little beyond the fish.
2. Let your fly line drift down stream to the spot a little beyond the fish. Lazy I know but ever try making a 90 foot cast with a 2.5foot 2wt.
3. The best way that will most likely double your chances of hooking a fish: Simply the snake cast(a cast that lands down river with the line in a snake like position in order to create a drag free drift).
Okay we have the fly a little down stream from the fish. There is many ways we can bring the fly back: here are some examples.
1. Bring the fly to the top of the water so it looks like it is about to jump or fly away, then strip the fly back in a steady motion, fast or slow at whatever speed you think.
2. Make sure the fly is on the surface strip the line up slowly, 1 millimeter at a time or 1 foot at a time or anywhere in between. Then let the fly back down stream. Repeat until the fly is at your feet or away from fish.
3. Is basically the same as 2 however this time let the current take your fly under water then pull it to the surface.
This Upstream drag has so many possibilities it’s wonderful. So lets get out on the water and let your hands and magic wand hook you into some fish. Note: I like to keep a high rod
