Matching The Hatch
Good day fellow hipsters, the comments to follow are my own experiences and I dont claim to know it all. This is what has worked for myself over the years of chasing chrome.
In the fall during and after the salmon have finished their spawn the #1 producer for me has been single egg flies. This holds true regardless of which watershed we fish. The thing we have to consider is to keep them small and as naturally coloured as the just layed, washed out eggs present in the stream. Even in stained water fish can and will pick out singles since these bundles of protein are readilly available that time of year.
More than the nutrient value they react out of memory in their par state when singles supplied them with the energy needed to smolt out into the lake. The rule of the thumb is to keep them small, the size of a pea for ex and naturaly coloured. While its true some flashy colours such as fl. pink, chart, orang and red produce fish my money goes with the yellows, peaches, whites,
orang, apricot and the likes.
Simple yet deadlier than most of us know!!!
Lets not forget about our nymphs
, they too are very important in our arsenal, but more so in the spring. In the colder months following Sep most nymphs barry themselves in the streams substrate and arent that readilly present to fish.
Although they to triger a strike responce in the fish present in the stream in the fall it is not as strong as that of a single egg in my opinion.
I hope the above mentioned answers some questions out there about choice of flies.
Tight loops……Pete
